This is an engraved version of the classic Antique Yixing teapot, rumoured to be invented by the legendary potter, Shao Daheng, of the Qing Dynasty.
The shape of this teapot was modelled after a drum, which has the identical pronunciation in Chinese as the word "antique".
Hence the teapot became Antique Yixing teapot.
The teapot is engraved with the phrase "玉壺茗香" that means "you need a quality teapot to complement great tea".
The key feature of Engraved Antique Yixing teapot is in the low centre of gravity characterised by the wide body, which looks like a drum.
Despite its width, the body retains a streamlined shape.
The opening is extruded from the body to create a neck.
The teapot handle is designed in the classic shape of a ear, and it matches the curved spout perfectly.
The inscription on the side reminds you to use a quality teapot to accompany great tea.
The flat shape reduces the teapot capacity and restricts water circulation during steeping.
This reduces the roasted taste in tea leaves, making it perfect for your heavily roasted Dong Ding Oolong.
